How do I change a transaction category?

Correct a transaction category and teach Finance AI how to handle similar transactions.

Open the transaction, tap its Category row, choose the right category, and save the change.

  1. 1Open the Finance AI mobile app.
  2. 2Tap the transaction you want to fix.
  3. 3Tap the Category row.
  4. 4Choose an existing category or create a new one if none fit.
  5. 5Save the category. The transaction updates immediately.

How Finance AI uses your correction

A manual category correction updates the selected transaction immediately. If the assistant sees a repeatable merchant or memo pattern, it can also create a categorization rule so matching transactions are handled consistently in the future.

If the AI originally categorized the transaction, the detail screen shows that it was categorized by AI and you can tap to override it.

When to create a new category

Create a category when the transaction represents a type of spending or income that does not fit your existing list. Reuse an existing category when the difference is only a one-off merchant name.

  • Good new categories are broad enough to reuse.
  • Avoid creating categories for a single store unless you truly want to track it separately.
  • You can edit category names, icons, and colors later from settings.
